Pre-School Curriculum

Members of staff, with the support of parents and the Board of Governors, aim to provide a stable, caring and stimulating environment in which each child is encouraged to reach his/her fullest potential in all aspects of his/her development through the challenge of interesting progressive play.

The school curriculum is based on the Curriculum for the Pre-School Child.  It includes the development of skills and the acquisition of knowledge, positive attitudes and values, sound relationships and self-discipline, and covers all the experiences the child meets at nursery school.

The curriculum is concerned with each child as an individual, taking into consideration his/her stage of development, and should arouse curiosity, provide opportunities for choosing activities, encourage experimentation, questioning, discovery and problem-solving, and provide opportunities for the practice of skills through repetition.

Children are encouraged to learn through a wide variety of activities which relate to all aspects of learning through the course of their play.  Learning is informal.  It is intended, through play, to help all children learn HOW TO LEARN and develop a good attitude to learning in order that they may be better prepared for the transition to a more formal learning environment.

Careful observations and recording by members of staff, and ongoing consultation with parents ensures that, as far as possible, what is offered meets the needs of all children.

By providing children with space to work and play, we encourage them to use their bodies more effectively.  Good personal hygiene is also promoted.  With the co-operation of parents, it is hoped to promote a good transition from home to school and eventually from nursery to primary school.

A balanced programme includes provision for the following broad areas of learning:

  • Social/Emotional Development
  • Early Mathematical Development
  • Language Development
  • Physical Development
  • The Arts - music, drama, creative art
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
